Stephanie Richards created the topic: Hewer/Gardiner/Townsend/Mills families
I am interested in any information on the above families in Chalford (as I understand Chalford was included in Bisley parish until 1894).
This is a brief summary of the information I have:
Francis Hewer (born about 1829 in Castle Eaton) worked on the Thames & Severn canal and at one time owned two boats. His son, Joseph, and his son-in-law, William Gardiner, worked for him. William, his wife and family lived in Chalford Vale from about 1873 onwards.(Mary Gardiner, my great-grandmother, was born in Dimmelsdale in 1882.)
At one time, Francis' second wife, Ellen Townsend, ran a carrier service from Chalford. Francis lived at Ashmeads from about 1899 to 1914. I believe he may have left Ashmeads to his son-in-law, John Matthew Mills.
