I am researching the families of Hook and Rowles both of whom came from the Bisley area.

My great, great grandfather was Richard Hook who was a baker, he was married to Eliza Rowles (daughter of Marshall Rowles) and subsequently to Harriet Whiting after the death of Eliza aged 37.

I believe that all of these were buried at France Lynch.

If anyone has any further information on either of theses family names I would be interested to hear from them. Richard Hook's father was Henry but there seem to have been quite a few Henry Hook's living in that area around the same time and I have become thoroughly confused!

Regards
Nicky Richards

Hello,
The Harriet Whiting that you speak of was born in 1818 ( 1816 is mentioned on the Rowles sight) and was the daughter of Jacob and Eleanor Whiting. Jacob was a stone mason and his daughter Harriet is listed in the 1851 census as living with them and working as a dress maker (age 33). Her younger brother Benjamin (also a mason and my great great grandfather ) moved to America a few years after the census and married Ann Newton . The daughter (my granmother) of their son Frank (Francis) Whiting was named Harriet after her great aunt. My grandmother's first cousin carried on correspondence with the Hooks at the turn of the century and I have letters from then AND ealyl letters back and forth from the late 1850's on from Benjamin's family with much detail of events with Richard and Harriet Hook in the 20 years or so they were together. I will reread things and send any info if you are interested.
