I have received an email enquiry from a Canadian who asks for help in identifying the photographer of a studio shot photograph taken c 1900 of what looks to be a middle-class lady reading a book.
On the reverse of the framed photograph is the inscription \"F. J. Restall & Sons, Stonehouse\"
Not directly a Bisley related query but as Restalls were present in Bisley from the early 1500s his origins may well have begun in the village.
I have a large data base on Bisley Restalls but none fit the bill - in fact the only Restall photographer known to me was Gilbert.
The only possible clue I have is a Frederick Jenkyns Restall born Cheltenham in 1861 and dying in 1912 in Stroud registration district.
Was Stonehouse large enough in the 1900s to have had its own photographer?
My problem re Restall photographer was resolved by the 1911 census, Stonehouse at that time not only had a photographer but his father was a hairdresser/tobacconist.
The query arose after a Canadian lady purchased a framed photograph at a garage sale which had on the reverse F. J. Restall, and Son. I have a large data base of Restalls who originated from Bilsey but this family was unknown to me until now.
